Overview
Culturally relevant teaching has roots in sociocultural theory developed by Lev Vygotsky. Individuals learn within specific social and cultural contexts, and they learn by engaging with cultural tools such as language.
Culturally relevant programs have been developed in order to build on and integrate students’ cultural knowledge for academic learning. Examples of culturally relevant programs are Funds of Knowledge, the Algebra Project, and Organic Reading. There are a number of ways to integrate culturally relevant teaching, such as including community issues and students’ role models and heroes into the curriculum. Culturally relevant, issues-centered teaching supports students’ development of higher-order thinking skills and understanding of social issues, and their engagement in the learning process.
Learning Objectives
L01. Analyze culturally relevant teaching and theoretical frameworks.
L02. Describe how culture influences the way people learn.
L03. Assess culturally relevant programs, such as Funds of Knowledge and the Algebra Project, and their elements.
L04. Investigate and plan how culturally relevant teaching can be integrated throughout the curriculum and instruction.
